The Arizona Cardinals take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in their first road game of the season. Arizona is coming off a 27-27 tie with the Lions in Week 1, a game in which they had to come back from an 18-point deficit in the second half. The Ravens have the league’s top offense and defense after a 59-10 win over the Miami Dolphins.

To preview the matchup and give us insight, Ravens Wire managing editor Matthew Stevens answered some questions about the Cardinals’ Week 2 opponent.

I don’t think you really know anything about any team in the league after just one game. But for Baltimore, there’s a sigh of relief about their offense. Regardless of how good or bad the Dolphins really are, they executed every time they touched the ball and got big plays from their young talent. The offensive line also shined after struggling a bit in the preseason and not naming a starter at left guard until kickoff.

On defense, they continued right off from where they were last year. This is a defense that is aggressive and can overwhelm teams through force. While that sometimes works against them, they didn’t skip a beat and they should improve as everyone gels together over the course of the season. I think they’ve overcome the loss of impact players by having their younger guys play faster and hit harder and that wears a team down over 60 minutes.

If Week 1 is their ceiling, this is a really dangerous team and one more people should be paying close attention to. The question now is if they can repeat that success after putting it all on film for everyone to see. We’ll find out this week if they can sustain that level of play or if they caught a bad team at a good time.

Yes, we know, it’s an early window Sunday game for a west coast team.  Let’s just get it out of the way now because when the Arizona Cardinals kickoff against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, it’ll get mentioned dozens of times on Fox.

What we also know is the Cardinals are still undefeated at 0-0-1 after tying the Detroit Lions in week 1.  Last week the Ravens defeated the Miami Dolphins 59-10.

Don’t expect a tie or a 59-10 blowout by the Ravens.  With it being the first road game for Cardinals rookie quarterback Kyler Murray and head coach Kliff Kingsbury, it will be interesting to see if they come out to start the game differently than last week.

The first three quarters were awful on both sides of the ball for the Cardinals.  Hopefully they don’t wait as long to get going against the Ravens or there will be no comeback this week.

The Ravens were hot last week.  They jumped out and scored 42 first-half points against the Dolphins.  Quarterback Lamar Jackson threw five touchdowns. That was in Miami.

This will be the Ravens home opener, so the crowd will be pumped.  The weather is expected to partly cloudy with a high of 85 degrees.

The Carolina Panthers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tonight on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 2 of the 2019 NFL season. This NFC South rivalry game is an important one for both sides after they each suffered a tough defeat in their respective openers. The Panthers mounted a valiant comeback attempt against the defending conference champion Rams, but ultimately fell just short in a game that ended 30-27. The Bucs struggled mightily on offense last week against the San Francisco 49ers, turning the ball over four times—including a trio of interceptions by quarterback Jameis Winston—in a 31-17 loss that spoiled new head coach Bruce Arians’ debut on the sidelines. Each side is now looking to bounce back on a short week of rest in order to notch a “W” and get to .500.

Oddsmakers are heavily favoring Carolina to win at home, installing the club as seven-point chalk. The spread has rather significantly since opening at CAR -5, as the books are rapidly adjusting to account for the lack of people interested in backing the Buccaneers. With just a few hours until Thursday Night Football kicks off, a whopping 75% of both total bets and cash wagered is on the Panthers, indicating the betting public has no faith in Tampa Bay to keep things close tonight. The total for the contest has stayed much more consistent, opening at 50.5 and dropping just a single point to 49.5 at this juncture. Bettors are a bit more split on this line, although the under side of the bet is slightly more popular and is drawing 53% of all tickets and 60% of the money.

If the Panthers/ recent performance on Thursday Night Football is any indication, then betting against them isn’t a bad idea. Carolina has failed to cover in each of its last four Thursday Night Football contests. Meanwhile, Cam Newton is 1-6 ATS all-time in prime-time Thursday night games.

There are two NFC South-based trends worth looking at in this game. Since the 2003 season, NFC South road underdogs between six to eight points in division contests are 21-12 ATS. Those teams when coming off a loss in their previous game are 12-7 ATS.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is 8-4-1 ATS when Winston starts as a road underdog of six or more points and 7-3-1 ATS when he starts as a road underdog of seven or more points.

Carolina isn’t the only squad that can’t seem to figure out Thursday night games. Tampa Bay is 0-5 ATS in its last five Thursday night appearances.

The Panthers have been pretty strong under Ron Rivera coming off a loss. They are 31-22-1 ATS after a loss and 17-9-1 ATS when playing at home following a loss. In games starting by Newton off a loss, the Panthers are 17-7-1 ATS.

There’s a theory out there that these early-season Thursday night games tend to be low-scoring, sloppy affairs like we saw last week in Chicago, but that’s not necessarily true. In fact, over the last 36 Thursday night games played in September, the under is hitting at exactly 50%.

That being said, the over has hit in 13 of Tampa Bay’s last 17 road games, and it is also 6-2 in Carolina’s last eight homes games. Don’t love these early season prime-time totals, but I could see this game squeaking into the 50s.

It’s hard to imagine that Jameis Winston leads what appears to be a lesser team into Carolina to knock off what should be an equally desperate Carolina squad. I don’t see that happening, but the success of both Winston and NFC South squads in similar spots sets up an enticing spot for a Tampa Bay cover. I also love the Buccaneers’ recent run of covers following double digit home losses. I don’t have a ton of confidence after watching Tampa’s offense sputter last week, but I think they bounce back enough to cover the seven-point spread.

The third preseason game is traditionally the “dress rehearsal” for a team's starters, followed by the fourth preseason game, which is the last chance for younger players and rookies to catch the eyes of coaches with the hope of earning a roster spot before the final cut.

For the Browns, their biggest battle seems far from being one, and that is their quarterback competition.

Other teams, like the New York Jets, that had quarterback competitions have already moved on and named their regular season starters (the Jets said Mark Sanchez is their man).

The Titans will be playing their fourth preseason game, out of five, so it is not known if they will be playing their starters for very long, but it will still be a battle.

The Browns were among the teams that called about receiver Antonio Brown on Saturday after he was released by the Raiders, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports.

Brown ultimately signed a one-year deal with the Patriots worth up to $15 million and including $9 million guaranteed, and the Browns will face him and their former Pro Bowl receiver Josh Gordon Oct. 27 in New England.

Mortensen reported there was a “robust’’ market for the former Steelers Pro Bowl receiver. He named the Seahawks as another team.

In other Browns pre-game news, No. 46 overall pick Greedy Williams will start at cornerback over Terrance Mitchell, the Browns announced before the game.

Mitchell has been starting opposite Denzel Ward most of the preseason.

Defensive end Genard Avery and rookie linebacker Sione Takitaki are among the Browns inactive.

For the Titans, a key inactive is right guard Kevin Pamphile, who tested his injured knee in pre-game warmups and walked off the field gingerly.

The time for talk is done. Odell Beckham Jr., Baker Mayfield and the Browns arrived this morning at FirstEnergy Stadium to make the final preparations for today’s 1 p.m. NFL opener against the Tennessee Titans.

The Browns have graced the cover of Sports Illustrated and been a popular media pick for the AFC North title. This afternoon, it gets real for a franchise that went winless just two seasons ago.

The Titans missed the playoffs last season and will be without left tackle Taylor Lewan, suspended four games by the NFL for using performance-enhancing drugs

Beckham, the Browns’ marquee receiver, did not play in any of the four preseason games because of a nagging but minor hip injury. Mayfield played sparingly as rookie coach Freddie Kitchens joined the league trend of keeping starting quarterbacks out of harm’s way in the preseason.

The Browns are 1-18-1 in their 20 home openers since returning in 1999.

Two of the top teams in the AFC will square off in Kansas City on Sunday when the Chiefs (4-0) host the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1) as small home favorites at sportsbooks.

The Chiefs are one of two unbeaten teams left along with the Los Angeles Rams after edging the Denver Broncos 27-23 on Monday night while the Jaguars bounced back from their lone loss last week with a 31-12 rout of the New York Jets.

NFL point spread: The Chiefs opened as three-point favorites; the total was 48.5 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.

Defensively, Jacksonville might be the best team Kansas City faces all season. The Chiefs struggled at times against another elite defensive team in the Broncos, outscoring them 14-3 in the fourth quarter to stay undefeated. The Jaguars have a stronger secondary that can hold Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes in check while their pass rush is also very good, led by defensive end Calais Campbell (three sacks).

The Jaguars are also 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 games played in the early afternoon, giving them another edge.

The Chiefs have won the past three meetings in this series by an average of nearly 18 points, including two games that were decided by more than 20. Jacksonville has never played against Kansas City with Mahomes under center though either, and that is one of the main reasons the team has stayed perfect

Mahomes is difficult to prepare for, and Denver saw that first-hand at home on Monday. The Broncos surrendered big play after big play, with Mahomes scrambling until his receivers were open. The Jaguars had trouble with Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago in a 9-6 loss, and Mahomes has performed better than anyone in the league through the first four weeks.

Without Jacksonville running back Leonard Fournette in the lineup due to a hamstring injury, Kansas City's defense simply needs to focus on stopping quarterback Blake Bortles. And while Bortles came through earlier in the season when Fournette was out in a 31-20 win over the New England Patriots, that game was at home. Take the Chiefs.

This could go one of two ways. Good, or bad. When the Bills pulled the ole’ switcheroo at OC, it put them on a 3 game winning streak. But somehow with the Jags it doesn’t feel as promising. I like how Jacksonville looks when they go into the hurry-up offense, and perhaps we’ll get more of that this week. But I still don’t like the Jag’s chances of scoring many points against Kansas City, especially considering that Indy put up just 14 points against them last week.

The Chiefs take the lead early, and are ahead 16-3 at the half. Bortles picks up the pace, but he can’t do much in the second half, either. The Chief’s defense dominates, and they get the win at home over the Jags —24-16.

The Baltimore Ravens travel to Miami to take on the Dolphins on Sunday in the opener for both teams. Thes teams played each other in five straight seasons from 2013-17, with the Ravens taking four of those five games. They last played in Baltimore on 2017, with Ravens winning in a romp, 40-0.

Baltimore hopes for a repeat against a Dolphins squad that is looking towards 2020. On Sunday, Miami dealt away linebacker Kiko Alonso to New Orleans for linebacker Vince Biegel, who had become a part-time player in coach Brian Flores’ new scheme. On Saturday, they made a monster deal, trading left tackle Laremy Tunstill, WR Kenny Stills, a 2020 fourth-rounder and a 2021 sixth-round pick to Houston for a 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 second-rounder, tackle Julien Davenport and cornerback Johnson Badermosi.

The Ravens were not quite as busy as they hope to get back to the playoffs under the guidance of second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The Baltimore Ravens went 10-6 last season and to their first playoff appearance since 2014. Rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson was inserted at midseason for an injured Joe Flacco and the team basically went old school option offense. Jackson did throw for 1,201 yards with six TDs and three picks in 170 attempts, but he ran for 695 yards on 147 attempts. Jackson’s ability to run the ball allowed Gus Edwards, a 240-pound rookie, to rush for 718 yards with two TDs.

The only thing hotter than the Miami weather on Sunday, will be the Baltimore Ravens. Ravens fans want to see the passing game get going. Lamar Jackson and Greg Roman after all, are starting an entirely new offense. That being said, I think the Ravens stick in their comfort zone and dominate the game with their run game. The Ravens may not break records with their rushing attack in this game, yet it’s certainly possible. Put me down for a Ravens win. They are the better team and they have no excuse in this one.

Here are a few things that I think will happen in this game. Ryan Fitzpatrick will have a rough day for the Dolphins. He may connect on a few deep passes. He may even make the game interesting in the beginning. The Dolphins problems protecting him are going to make his day miserable.

The Ravens are expected to have a great defense. Their secondary should be able to flex their muscles in this game. The Dolphins receiving talent is quite average. This is one of the bigger mismatches you will ever see on a football field.

There’s no way to dress this game up and make it look like a heavy weight clash. The Dolphins are one of the worst teams in football. They’re buckling in for a long year. The trajectories of these teams couldn’t be more different. The Ravens have a chance to be a playoff team. The Dolphins don’t.

The offense should be a little more pass-heavy this season under new offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The Ravens drafted Marquise “Hollywood” Brown from Oklahoma in the first round and Miles Boykin from Notre Dame in the third to improve their speed. Considering their lack of success over the years at drafting this position (Breshad Perriman the latest), this was a bit of a gamble. Last season, they relied on slow receiver Willie Snead (62 catches for 5651 yards) and tight end Mark Andrews (34 for 552 yards). Both are b back along with second-year tight end Hayden Hurst and blocking tight end Nick Boyle.

Baltimore finished second in the NFL in rushing (152.6ypg) and fourth against the run (82.9ypg). They had the league’s number on defense but those numbers could falter some since they lost linebacker C.J. Mosley and their top pass rushers (Terrell Suggs and Za’Darius Smith). The lost 16 combined sacks between those three players. The loss of Mosley could impact the run defense and they didn’t really replace Smith and Suggs at outside linebacker. They’ll need OLB Matthew Judon (7.0 sacks) and Tyus Bowser (former second-round pick) to step up. Fourth-year inside linebacker Patrick Onwuasor (5.5 sacks) has immense potential, while Kenny Young and Chris Board could rotate at the other spot.

The Minnesota Vikings will play host to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon inside U.S. Bank Stadium. It will mark the 31st meeting all-time between the two teams. The Vikings hold a 19-11 edge over the Falcons in the series. And Minnesota has won each of the last three matchups, the most recent being a 14-9 victory in 2017. Both the Vikings and the Falcons look to return to playoff form in 2019 after taking big steps in the wrong direction last season.

The Vikings came into the 2018 season with high hopes following a 13-3 campaign, which earned them a division title and a trip to the NFC Championship Game. Newly acquired quarterback Kirk Cousins was supposed to be the missing piece that would carry them to the next level, but that didn't come to fruition in a disappointing 8-7-1 season that culminated in a missed opportunity to earn a spot in the playoffs.

Thanks to several offseason move, Mike Zimmer's Vikings appear poised to return to front-runner status in 2019. The additions of new offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and assistant head coach Gary Kubiak should go a long way in fixing an offense that ranked just 20th in the league last season. The Vikings return 10 starters on a defense that perennially ranks among the best in the NFL.

The Falcons also entered the 2018 season with high hopes following back-to-back playoff appearances that included a trip to the Super Bowl in '16. Unfortunately, a rash of early-season injuries would take a serious toll, resulting in a lackluster 7-9 campaign that left the Falcons sitting at home during the postseason for the first time since 2015.

Like the Vikings, the Falcons have plenty of reasons to believe that they will bounce back and return to the forefront of the NFL in 2019. First and foremost, they enter Week 1 with a clean bill of health. That alone should pay huge dividends, provided they can remain relatively healthy. The Falcons are also optimistic about their chances to keep their star-studded offense humming along under the direction of new (and former) offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter. Meanwhile, the defense expects to take a step forward with head coach and defensive guru Dan Quinn now calling the shots on that side of the football.

The Falcons' high-powered passing attack has long ranked among the best and most feared in the NFL. However, the same can be said for the Vikings' vaunted pass defense. And if recent history is any indication, Matt Ryan and company could have a tough row to hoe on Sunday.

Ryan has compiled just 403 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in his last two games combined against Minnesota (2015 and '17), both of which resulted in Falcon losses. The Vikings may also be the only NFL team with a successful track record against elite wide receiver Julio Jones. That's thanks in large part to star cornerback Xavier Rhodes, who has limited Jones to just 13 catches for 162 yards and zero touchdowns over three combined games.

Rhodes vs. Jones will once again be the marquee matchup on Sunday. And there is reason to believe that Jones will finally be able to get over the hump against his arch-nemesis. Rhodes seemed to lose a step last season in a down year that ended prematurely with a torn hamstring. If Rhodes doesn't return to elite form, Jones could have a field day against him. Jones will also benefit from Calvin Ridley's presence this time around. Ridley led the Falcons in touchdown receptions (10) last season and should help take some of the heat off.

The biggest concern for Atlanta's passing attack on Sunday may lie in the trenches. A retooled offensive line, that is expected two feature two rookies, will be paired against one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL. Atlanta will certainly have its hands full trying to keep the dynamic trio of Danielle Hunter, Everson Griffen, and Linval Joseph out of the backfield. Hunter, who racked up 14.5 sacks last season, provides the biggest threat to Ryan's well-being.

Minnesota's offensive woes were well-documented and largely to blame for the team's five-game slide in the win column last season. It also cost offensive coordinator John DeFilippo his job after just 13 games.

In an effort to fix the problem, head coach Mike Zimmer brought in Gary Kubiak as an offensive advisor to help new offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski overhaul the offense, along with new offensive line coach/run game coordinator Rick Dennison.

Sunday's matchup against Atlanta will provide our first real chance to see the new offense in action (in a game that actually counts). The new-look offense employs a zone-blocking scheme that emphasizes the run game to help set up the play-action passing game. It's almost identical to the offense that Kirk Cousins ran during his time in Washington.

That familiarity should help Cousins, which in turn bodes well for top targets Adam Theilen, Stefon Diggs (who has been limited in practice this week due to a hamstring injury) and Kyle Rudolph to continue producing at a high level. But a Minnesota run game that was sorely lacking last season, ranking just 30th in the NFL, stands to benefit the most. The new scheme is tailor-made for a speedy slasher like Dalvin Cook, who should flourish in this system.

Of course, the new zone-scheme will only go as far as the offensive line can take it, and that will be the big test against the Falcons on Sunday. The Vikings' revamped offensive line, bolstered by first-round draft pick Garrett Bradbury at center, still has question marks, despite showing plenty of promise in the preseason.

As previously referenced, the Falcons were riddled with injuries in 2018, landing some of the team's top players on IR, and significantly impacting their season. The good news is that most of those players will be back on the field this Sunday. Chief among them is running back Devonta Freeman, who played in just two games in 2018. Freeman will be needed more than ever with the departure of Tevin Coleman. And the Falcons can only hope that Freeman returns to Pro Bowl form in short order.

Look for Atlanta to lean heavily on Freeman this Sunday, as success in the run game in this matchup will be crucial to helping Ryan and company get things going in the passing game. That said, success will not come easy against a very stingy Minnesota front seven.

The Falcons defense will get a big shot in the arm with the healthy return of several star players as well. Middle linebacker Deion Jones was sorely missed last season. Jones is a tackling machine that will provide a much-needed stabilizing force in the middle for the Falcons against the Vikings on Sunday. He’s also one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL.

The Atlanta secondary also gets a big boost with the return of safeties Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen. Their absence last season left a huge void in the Falcons secondary. And their return should prove invaluable against a dangerous Minnesota receiving corps.

Week 1 of the NFL season offers plenty of intriguing matchups, and this one ranks right near the top. The big question is – will the Vikings' new-look offense magically cure their biggest source of frustration from last season?

There will likely be some kinks to work out in week 1. And Minnesota will be put to the test by an Atlanta defense that should be much improved with the healthy return of Deion Jones, Keanu Neal, and Ricardo Allen and Dan Quinn calling the plays. But it seems likely that the Vikings will find some semblance of success on Sunday, particularly in the run game with Dalvin Cook.

The Falcons' chances hinge on their ability to establish the ground game with Devonta Freeman. Matt Ryan and Julio Jones do not have the best track record against the Vikings. And the Atlanta passing game will have a hard time taking flight without plenty of help from Freeman. In the end, the Vikings' defense will prove to be too much for the Falcons. Minnesota wins a hard-fought battle in front of the home crowd.

Both Buffalo and New York have second-year quarterbacks entering a sophomore season filled with expectations for progress. Bills quarterback Josh Allen will take the field with at least eight new starters on the field with him after general manager Brandon Beane completely overhauled the offense during the offseason.

The most notable additions on the Bills offense are center Mitch Morse, wide receiver John Brown, slot receiver Cole Beasley and rookie running back Devin Singletary.

Morse spent most of the summer in the NFL’s concussion protocol after suffering the fourth documented concussion of his four-year career on the third day of training camp. He’s out now and will start for the Bills against the Jets. Beasley and Allen looked to be in mid-season form when they connected on five passes for 44 yards.

The Bills are hoping Beasley jumpstarts Allen’s production in the short game. The former Dallas Cowboys wide out uses his expert route running skills to separate to give the quarterback a target in the five-12 yard range.

Allen ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on the ground in the only game he played against the Jets in 2018. He was ineffective as a passer though, completing just 50 percent of his passes with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

The money spent on the offensive side of the ball was specifically spent to unlock Allen’s ability as a passer and Sunday’s game will be the first real test to see if the changes made were the right ones.

The Bills released two-time All Pro running back LeSean McCoy before the season started mainly because of the belief in Singletary, who will likely split time with veteran Frank Gore and third-down back T.J. Yeldon.

The Bills won the first matchup between the two teams when backup quarterback Matt Barkley started after signing with Buffalo less than two weeks prior. But the second game is more worth looking at when thinking about this year’s matchup. The game featured both Allen and Jets quarterback Sam Darnold in their first game against each other almost nine months after getting drafted four spots apart in the 2018 NFL draft.

New York’s offensive line and secondary are probably its two biggest concerns heading into the opener. The Jets signed veteran center Ryan Kalil at the beginning of training camp after the former Carolina Panthers staple retired in the offseason. He has had to get up to speed in a hurry and now anchors the offensive line against a Bills defensive front that should be even better in 2019 after drafting defensive tackle Ed Oliver ninth overall in April. The Jets added to their defensive line in the first round, too, when they selected Alabama’s Quinnen Williams third overall. He’ll get his chance Sunday to affect Allen and the Bills new-look running game, along with teammates on the line Leonard Williams and Henry Anderson. Cornerback Trumaine Johnson will likely get the assignment of covering new Bills receiver John Brown, who the former St. Louis Rams defensive back called underrated. Johnson went against Brown when he was in Arizona and said he’s familiar with what the veteran playmaker can do. The Jets will be down a pair of linebackers for this game. Avery Williamson had season-ending surgery recently to repair a torn ACL and Brandon Copeland, who played well against the Bills in 2018, is suspended for the first four weeks of the season. On the offensive side of the ball, the Bills will be the first team to get a look at new Jets running back Le’veon Bell, who didn’t play in the preseason. The Jets will be without starting tight end Chris Herndon, who is also serving a suspension.

Both defenses are going to be tough to score on but I think the Bills offense has enough new weapons to exploit some missing pieces in at the second level of the Jets defense. If you go an watch some of Darnold’s preseason reps you’ll notice some happy feet as he’s obviously dealing with some issues in front of him on the line. It’s partly his style but if this Bills defensive line can generate the pressure they’ve been talking about all summer then they’ll likely force some turnovers. When Allen gets a short field he usually takes advantage. I also think the Jets’ strategy of making Allen beat them from the pocket could come back and bite them. The strategy is to get the ball out fast and it was executed well against the Carolina Panthers, who employ a 3-4 defense just like the Jets. If Williams is planning on covering Beasley with a linebacker that could be a matchup to exploit all game long.
